It may seem puzzling that the September road trip gets recorded in bits and pieces and several months after the fact. I think I'm taking my time bcause it's fun to savor the memories of that trip and in record-breaking cold, it's comforting to remember a warmer time.
The Galax Smokehouse was a recommendation of the Sterns. We made a slight detour on our interstate routes to home to savour some good southern BBQ before we hit the desert. The Smokehouse is a large, but unpretentious, place on Main St. in Galax. We liked the Q, but we liked the friendly service even better. Our waiter's name was Anthony and he is a living advertisement for a genuinely warm Southern welcome. If you find yourself in this neck of the woods, make the time to eat here. Good BBQ and great hospitality.
The ribs were juicy and tender. The smoked potato was beautifully smoky and complemented the ribs perfectly.
The smoked hamburger was a revelation of beautifully smoked meat.
A sampling of the sauces that were available to add flavor to the meat.
No BBQ decor is complete without a pig.
