We've just returned from an extended road trip which took us places in the South and along the East Coast. Such journeys provide welcome opportunities to try new eateries--some elegant and some down home. My friends suspect me of going on these trips for the sole reason of eating at places I have read about or heard about. There is truth in their suspicion. While we did our share of museum-going, the food memories are the highlights that I remember best.
Our first stop was at the Loveless Cafe in Nashville, TN. I've read about the Loveless for years, but my travels in the South have never before included a stop there. This time we made it a priority and we were glad we did. Since we arrived at the height of the lunch rush, there was a 45-minute wait for a table. That was ok with us because it gave us time to to tour the Loveless Empire of shops surrounding the restaurant. There was the gift shop, the jam and jelly factory,a pottery and art gallery, an antique shop. It was entertaining to survey this tribute to entrepeneurial capitalism.
When we were finally seated, we found the wait had been worthwhile. The bisucuits are still outstanding and the preserves which accompanied them were fresh and tasted like the fruit from which they had been made. I would rate them among the best of commercial preserves that I have tasted. The fried green tomatoes were just the right combination of tart and sweet with a crisp crust and the Chricken Fried chicken and Country Fried Steak were rib-sticking and delicious.

We couldn't find room for dessert. Better for our waistlines, but the pies looked luscious. Perhaps the fates will permit another visit to the Loveless and we can start with dessert.
don't know which I like better the "don't bother me photo" or the review... Given my expectations about the menu I'd probably order fried catfish, grits and slaw then again maybe just a plate of biscuits... :-)
