Mrs. Rowe's has been in the Sterns' Roadfood for a long time. It is one of those places that I always wanted to stop but the timing was never right. This year the timing was perfect and we were able to stay in Staunton, VA for the night on our homeward trek. That meant that we could eat at Mrs. Rowe's twice--for dinner and breakfast. The place has grown over the years in order to accomodate increasing crowds and to keep the wait as short as possible. We arrived early enough to avoid the rush and we're seated promptly.
Kay ordered fried chicken and I, the catfish. Both of us were mightily pleased with our choices. Crisp, juicy, tender and above all, flavorful. Breakfast wasn't as good as dinner which surprised us. Still, the food kept us going until lunch and that's no small thing on a roadtrip.
Mrs. Rowe's is known for their wonderful pies. The Coconut Cream pie which Kay ordered disappeared before I could get a picture of it. Trust me when I say that it was a piece of creamy, airy goodness.
If you find yourself drving on I-81 in Virginia and you're near Stanton, you won't be disappointed if you stop at Mrs. Rowe's for lunch or dinner or for a slice of pie to nourish you on your travels.
